BBQ Wood: Knock on Wood

Barbecues are fun to have with friends and family around. They are
a lot more fun when prepared outdoors as guests gather around the grills chatting away in the afternoon or evening breeze. Hotdogs, vegetables, red or white meat can be skewered in bamboo sticks or metal stakes that contribute in the flavor of your bbqs. But for that more smoky taste that bbqs are famous for, the use of BBQ wood is the top choice for outdoor grillers.

There are actually different ways in firing up the grill with the use of fuel. While synthetic fuels are easily available, some others would prefer organic types of fuel.

The use of charcoal, gas and BBQ wood are common ways to light up the grill but the use of gas is the most common one. Gas is easy to obtain that’s why people no longer bother using other materials.

But if you don’t know how to burn this gas, its odor will get into the taste of your barbecues and you will end up with a pungent-tasting food that has the taste of gas in it.

You can also make use of charcoal. Its carbonized briquettes burn nicely that allows the BBQs to cook slowly but they can be messy.

The best to use is wood. However, not all wood can be used for the grill since some BBQ woods have low-grade quality that affects the taste of the food. Expect your food to taste like burnt fuel if you got low quality wood.

This is because the smoke from the wood has a pungent reaction with fire. However, there are high quality woods that you can find solely for your grilling. These good quality woods give off a nice and fragrant smell almost aromatic that you want to get into the food you are barbecuing.

Woods of this type make the smoky flavor of your food especially meat.

Who hasn’t heard of “hickory-smoke flavor” in sauces and marinades? They are so good that even corn or potato chips are flavored this way. This famous barbecue flavor comes from BBQ woods made from hickory tree.

Once you burn this type of wood, it lets loose a musky aroma just perfect for grilled foods. The extract of this tree and its nuts are made into bbq flavorings and recipes. Sadly, hickory wood for is not too readily available since the hickory tree is not only made as firewood.

Cinnamon type of wood is also a good choice to fuel your grill if you love the smell of cinnamon. The sweet and spicy smelling flavor comes from the bark of the cinnamon tree.

They are powdered and used in baked goods and drinks. When you use cinnamon BBQ woods, its flavor will surely get into the meat and you will have that smoky-spicy taste in your barbecue.
