Let us start with the etymology of BBQ itself. However you want to call it, may it be barbecue, barbeque, or just plain BBQ, these words and contractions come from the same origin, which is the word barabicu. Interestingly, barabicu is actually a Caribbean word.

When translated in English, the word would then mean a sacred fire pit.

Over the last few years, the history on BBQ would definitely tell you that there has been much evolution when it comes to the meaning of the word itself. Because the modern definition that we know of BBQ today now refers to either one of two things: the meal that is being served, or the grill that is used when the meal is being cooked.

But when it comes to the origin of BBQ, then you can definitely say that everything began in the Caribbean. From the Caribbean, the word BBQ was then brought to the island of Spain, and was translated in the Spanish language.

From there, it did not take long for the word to spread all throughout the major regions of the whole Europe. You would even see from the history on BBQ that the word discovered its own place in both the English and the French languages.

You also may have heard a lot of myths about BBQ itself. One of the more popular ones concerns old roadhouses that have long been used to promote Bar, Beer, and Cues.

Bar, beer, and cues are used in the context of the game of pool or billiards. From this promotion, it is believed that this is the origin of the word BBQ. However, there is no evidence that can support such a claim.

The history on BBQ, however, denotes that the real background on BBQ dishes should be focused on the way meat was cooked years and years before.

Way back when people started appreciating meat coming from cow, pigs, and chickens, it did not take too long for them to start cooking them over fire. Baking, roasting, and grilling over fire started way before the invention of gas barbecue grills even.

Of course, these cooking methods evolved over the years, resulting to the more modern and popular methods that we know of today.
